The ranking uses annual data from the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs to determine which countries receive the highest number of US immigrant visas.

The US immigration process is confusing at best, but it always starts with a visa. A visa, in the context of immigration, is essentially a permit to enter a country, issued to a person who wants to work and reside in the United States. There are two categories of visas: immigrant and non-immigrant.

These visas are usually for temporary workers, but also for other purposes, such as basic trips for tourists from certain countries. Even if obtained for work purposes, a nonimmigrant visa expires and does not lead to a green card or citizenship.

Some examples of nonimmigrant visa categories include: members of the press, diplomatic representatives, U.S. Foreign military personnel stationed in, athletes and other unique situations flourish. The popular, and almost unobtainable, H-1B visas are actually nonimmigrant visas.

On the other hand, immigrant visas can be employment-based or family-based. The intention is that they will eventually obtain permanent status in the United States through a green card or citizenship. A common example of an immigrant visa is the K-1 visa, or “fiancée visa” for people who marry US citizens.

Last year, more than 285,000 US immigrant visas were issued. Here is how it is distributed in every country of the world:

Mexican citizens received the most visas to immigrate permanently to the United States at almost 40,600. America’s other neighbor, Canada, ranked 43rd, receiving only 1,464 visas. China and India are also ranked #2 and #7 respectively.

About 15% of the population of the United States consists of immigrants, and the total number of immigrants in the country is the highest in the world at 50.6 million.

As for how many visas are issued each year, there is a federal ceiling of 700,000, and some countries have their own specific caps on how many their citizens can receive, as mandated by the United States. Although the numbers vary greatly from year to year, they have not approached the limit in the last decade.

Here is a look at the total issuance of US immigrant visas worldwide. Interestingly, it was almost half during the pandemic:

Visualizing (and Understanding) the Inverted Yield Curve Market Since the 1960s, almost every recession has been preceded by an inverted yield curve. This animation highlights how the reversal is intensifying.

At the end of 2021, it happened again. And in 2022, the inverted yield curve looks ever steeper. So what does an inverted yield curve look like and what does it signal about the economy?

The visualization above by James Eagle shows the yield curve for November 2021-2022 using future Eurodollar yields, which serves as an indicator for the direction of the yield curve.

In general, a yield curve is a line graph that plots interest rates for bonds with the same credit rating but different maturity dates.

Under normal economic conditions, investors are rewarded with higher interest rates for holding bonds for longer periods, resulting in a sloping yield curve. Because these higher return factors factor in the risk of inflation or default over time.

So when interest rates on long-term bonds fall relative to short-term bonds, the result is an inverted yield curve.

Why Nestle Is One Of The Most Hated Companies In The World

A worrying trend is that the U.S. An inverted yield curve in major government securities, such as Treasuries, can often predict a recession. For every recession since the 1960s, with only one exception in the mid-1960s, an inverted yield curve typically occurs about a year earlier.

This is because the yield curve has a profound effect on financial markets. If the market predicts financial turmoil and interest rates will fall in the long term, investors will rush to buy long-term bonds.
